City Hotels Can Make A Greener Difference

At The Address Collective, sustainability is part of how we welcome guests, support our teams and care for the communities around our hotels. Across Dublin, Cork, Sligo and Glasgow, our approach is guided by three simple pillars: People, Community and Planet.

We know that when people think about sustainable travel, they might picture wide open landscapes, retreats or the countryside. Lovely, of course, but city hotels have an important part to play too. Even without acres of land, we can make thoughtful choices every day, from reducing waste and managing energy use to supporting local suppliers and helping guests make greener decisions during their stay.

That is the idea behind our Think Green | Act Green programme: practical sustainability that fits naturally into a comfortable hotel experience.

Small Choices With Real Impact

We believe greener stays should feel simple. Through our Think Green | Act Green programme, guests are invited to take part in small, practical actions that can make a real difference over time.

These include:

• Reusing towels and linen where possible
• Separating recyclable waste in bedrooms
• Switching off lights and appliances when leaving the room
• Choosing public transport where practical
• Opting out of daily housekeeping where available

In our bedrooms, guests will find separate bins for general and recyclable waste, making it easier to separate items during their stay. We also encourage simple choices such as conserving water, reusing towels and switching off lights or appliances when they are not needed.

And no, we are not asking anyone to sit in the dark with a lukewarm cup of tea. It is about using what we need, wasting less where we can, and making it easier for guests to join in without compromising comfort.

Through our partnership with the International Tree Foundation, guests who opt out of daily room cleaning can also help support reforestation and conservation projects. Founded in 1922, the International Tree Foundation works with communities to plant, protect and promote trees.

Over a one-year period, guest participation has helped us support the planting of 2,510 trees, a reminder that small choices can grow into something much bigger. Quite literally, in this case.

Sustainability In The Heart Of The City

City-centre hotels come with their own sustainability challenges. Historic buildings, busy locations and high guest footfall all require careful, practical thinking. But they also bring opportunity.

At The Address Glasgow, our hotel is housed in the historic former Pearl Assurance Building, a landmark property in the city centre. Working within a heritage building means balancing guest comfort, operational efficiency and respect for the character of the place. It is not always the simplest route, but it is one we care about.

Across the group, we continue to invest in systems and processes that help us monitor electricity, gas, water and waste. Our wider sustainability approach includes measuring and managing energy consumption, water consumption and waste generation, as outlined in our Think Green | Act Green commitments.

We also focus on everyday improvements, such as low-energy lighting, water-saving technologies, reducing single-use plastics, encouraging waste separation and monitoring food waste. These are not always the most glamorous parts of hotel life, but they matter. Behind every relaxing stay is a lot of careful work, and occasionally a very determined spreadsheet.

People At The Centre

For us, sustainability is not only about buildings, bins or energy meters. It is also about people.

Our teams are at the heart of this journey. Through ESG training, sustainability programmes and employee forums, we want our colleagues to feel informed, involved and confident in shaping a more responsible hospitality industry.

Community is just as important. The Address Collective supports local suppliers, works with local artists and contributes to charitable and community initiatives across the places we call home. Our Corporate Social Responsibility work includes support for organisations and causes connected to health, education, community care and wellbeing.

In Glasgow, team initiatives have included a Clyde riverbank clean-up, while planned tree planting will support biodiversity. These kinds of hands-on projects help connect sustainability to real places and real people, which is where it becomes most meaningful.
