Artist
Paul Hughes
Paul was born and raised in Dublin. He works out of his studio, an old pig barn in Blackrock in Dublin. It gives him the space and opportunity he craves to develop a continuous flow of new abstract landscapes. Paul has been painting for over 35 years. Over this time he has built up a very loyal following. It is only in the last 16 years though that he has publicly exhibited his work.
In 2007 The Tramyard Gallery in Dalkey in Dublin held the first solo showing (‘Ten Paintings’) of Paul’s work. In January 2009 Paul was invited by the DDDA to hold the first showing of his ‘Absorption’ / Horizon series of work. This exhibition, called ‘Do You Ever Get There’, was a great success and lead to his first solo show in London in June 2009 at the King’s Road Gallery. This show was called ‘Between Two Worlds’.
Since his first show in London he has had two more successful sell out shows in London and Tanya Baxter Contemporary has launched him recently in Asia with ‘The Chiaroscuro series‘.
Paul’s obsession has always been light, particularly the beautiful Dark-Light around Dublin Bay. His work is constantly evolving and he has an inability to settle and to not keep seeking to progress his work through constant and continuous abstraction of this light, that is full of darkness.
In his latest project, which has been over 18 months in development, Paul has endeavored to breakout of the restrains of seascapes, no matter how abstract they were, and to deconstruct everything to pure colour expression in which the darker spaces between give the light it’s intensity. The result is everything is impact and energy.
In this new body of work titled ‘The Infinite Possibilities of The Space Between‘ rather than being rooted in one place, merely ‘staring at’, observing the land, the sea and skyscapes we get the sense of hurtling headlong into the infinite spaces between the colours at possibly 1,000 MPH. Or maybe wherever your mind and imagination will let you travel.
Are these pieces massive untethered galaxies of light or minuscule micro worlds he is creating or is it what he imagines the energy between things actually looks like?
In 2023 Paul’s work debuted in the US at Volta Arts in New York and then was invited to show at Sotheby’s Fine Art Institute on Lexington Ave. Since then he has been invited to exhibit in At various shows from in The Hampton, Miami, Palm Beach, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
The Irish Consulate in New York installed The Irish Embassy in Washington DC have installed the first pieces from Paul’s new body of work ‘Green is a Myriad’….
